Imaging Frequently Asked Questions

I have an MRI prescription. Can I choose an imaging facility?

An X-ray or MRI prescription works in the same manner as a drug prescription. You can have your X-rays or MRI performed at the imaging facility of your choice. A prescription is required for an X-ray or MRI diagnostic test.

I'm afraid of being in tight spaces. Is there an open MRI design?

Many MRI facilities now have modern equipment with a more open design to accomodate patients who are claustrophobic or obese. If you think that open MRI equipment would be better for you, please call ahead to the MRI facility to ensure that they can accomodate your needs with open MRI technology.

What is an MRI for?

A Magnetic Resonance Imaging study helps a doctor see structures in your body that they would otherwise not be able to see with standard X-ray or other imaging. For example, many abnormalities of the brain, spinal cord, liver, adrenal glands, muscles and bones are better seen on MRI than in other tests.

When do I get the results?

Results of your X-ray or MRI test will usually be available within 2-3 days. You will be given an explanation of the results by your prescribing physician.

What is the difference between X-ray & MRI?

An X-ray primarily visualizes the bony structures of the body. Doctors typically prescribe X-rays when looking for fractures, or any other bony pathology. MRI films visualize both bone and soft tissue and are typically the best diagnostic tool when doctors suspect soft tissue pathology such as a herniated disc, ligament and tendon tears, or organ pathology.

How long will it take?

MRI imaging usually takes 30 to 60 minutes for each area tested.
X-rays may take 5 to 30 minutes depending on the areas viewed. In addition, you need to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to your appointment in order to fill out the necessary paperwork.

Who reads my films?

Your prescribing physician will usually specify who will read the pictures and provide a report. Qualified Radiologists are usually on staff at MRI facilities and will professionally read your films if your doctor chooses. Some doctors prefer to read your films themselves.

Are there any MRI risks?

Those who have implanted pacemakers, mechanical, electrical, or magnetically controlled devices cannot be scanned.

I have piercings. Will I need to remove them?

All metal objects will need to be removed including earrings, dentures, hearing aids and all piercings. Metal objects will obscure inside bodily structures and make it difficult for a radiologist to read the films. By remembering to remove these items at home, you will save time keeping your appointment on schedule.
